Early Life and Education
George Cressler Young was born on August 4, 1916, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went to the University of Florida and earned two degrees. In 1938, he received an Artium Baccalaureus degree. Then, in 1940, he earned a Bachelor of Laws from the Fredric G. Levin College of Law at the same university.
Career Before Becoming a Judge
After finishing his studies, Young started working as a lawyer.
- He had his own law practice in Winter Haven, Florida, from 1941 to 1942.
- During World War II, he served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant from 1942 to 1946.
- After the war, he returned to private law practice in Miami, Florida, from 1947 to 1948.
- He also worked as an assistant for U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator George Smathers from 1948 to 1951.
- Before becoming a judge, he practiced law in Jacksonville, Florida, from 1951 to 1961.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy chose George Young to become a federal judge. This means he would work for the United States government, not just for Florida.
Serving in Multiple Courts
- On September 18, 1961, he officially became a judge for two courts: the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
- In 1962, he was also assigned to serve on a new court, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. This happened automatically because of a new law.
- By 1966, he focused only on the Middle District of Florida court.
Chief Judge and Senior Status
- From 1973 to 1981, Judge Young served as the Chief Judge of the Middle District of Florida. This means he was the main judge in charge of that court.
- In 1981, he took on a special role called senior status. This allowed him to work a reduced schedule while still helping the court.
- Judge Young continued to serve until his death on April 24, 2015, in Orlando, Florida. He dedicated many years of his life to the legal system.
