George Caldwell Granberry was an important person in Mississippi's history. He was a teacher, a postmaster, and a politician who helped make laws. He worked to improve things in his community during a time of big changes in the United States.

A Leader in Mississippi

Serving in the Legislature

George Caldwell Granberry was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1882. This is like being a state lawmaker. He represented Hinds County, a part of Mississippi.

While he was a lawmaker, he was also a school teacher. He was part of a special group called the Committee on Propositions and Grievances. This committee helped look into ideas and complaints from people.

In 1881, he worked with other politicians on something called a "fusion ticket." This meant he joined with Republican candidates like J. B. Greaves, Thomas Atkinson, and J. A. Shorter to run for office together.

Postmaster of Raymond

In 1901, George Granberry was chosen to be the postmaster of Raymond. Raymond is a town also in Hinds County, Mississippi. A postmaster is in charge of the local post office.

He took over from the previous postmaster, Philomene Buckley, after she resigned. Granberry held this important job for three years. He was the second Black person in that area to hold a federal office. He left the position on June 1, 1905.

Republican National Convention

Before 1905, George Granberry also served as a delegate for Mississippi. He attended a Republican National Convention. This is a big meeting where members of the Republican Party choose their candidate for president.
