About George Cameron's Life
George Cameron was born around 1768, possibly in the Tyneside region of England. We don't know much about his early life, but we do know he worked as a hairdresser. He had his own business in the Cloth Market in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Cameron and the Volunteer Soldiers
Around the early 1800s, a famous French leader named Napoleon was a big threat to Britain. Because of this, groups of volunteer soldiers were formed all over the country. These groups were a bit like a "Home Guard" to protect local areas. George Cameron joined one of these groups in Newcastle upon Tyne and became a sergeant.
His Only Song
During this time, around 1804, Cameron wrote his first and only known song. It was called "The Pitman's Revenge (against Bonaparte)." He first sang this song at a meeting of his soldier group. Everyone really liked it, but it seems he never wrote another song.
George Cameron passed away on June 20, 1823, when he was 55 years old. He is buried in St. Nicholas' Churchyard in Newcastle.
