George Carnegie, 9th Earl of Northesk facts for kids
George John Carnegie, the 9th Earl of Northesk, was an important British nobleman and a soldier. He held the title of Deputy Lieutenant (DL), which meant he helped the Lord Lieutenant of a county. He lived from 1843 to 1891.

George John Carnegie was born on December 1, 1843. His father was William Carnegie, the 8th Earl of Northesk. His mother was Georgiana Maria Elliot.
Military Career
When George was young, he was known by his courtesy title, Lord Rosehill. In 1862, he joined the army as an officer in the 1st Dragoons. Later that same year, he moved to another famous regiment called the Scots Fusilier Guards, where he became a lieutenant.
He continued to rise through the ranks. In 1866, he was promoted to captain. By 1873, he had become a lieutenant-colonel. He decided to retire from the army in 1874.
Personal Life and Home
In 1865, George John Carnegie married Elizabeth Georgina Frances Elliot. Her father was Admiral Sir George Elliot. George and Elizabeth had four children together:
- Helen Alice Carnegie (who passed away in 1908)
- David John Carnegie, who became the 10th Earl of Northesk (1865–1921)
- Douglas George Carnegie (1870–1937)
- Ian Ludovic Andrew Carnegie (1881–1909)
George John Carnegie also oversaw the rebuilding of his main family home, Longwood House, in Hampshire. The famous architect George Devey designed the new house. George John Carnegie passed away on September 9, 1891, at the age of 47.
