Early Life and Education

George Chafin was born in 1689 and was the fifth son of Thomas Chafin. His father was also a Member of Parliament. George likely went to Winchester College, a well-known school, from about 1702 to 1706.

After that, he went to Oriel College, Oxford, a famous university, in 1707 when he was 18. In 1711, when his older brother Thomas passed away, George inherited his family's properties. These lands were in different parts of England, including Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, and Somerset.

George Chafin was responsible for rebuilding Chettle House. He hired a famous architect named Thomas Archer to design the new house. In 1714, he married Elizabeth Sturt.

Political Career

George Chafin started his political career in 1713. He became a Member of Parliament for Dorset in the general election that year. Being a Member of Parliament meant he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

He was elected without anyone running against him in 1713, 1715, 1722, 1734, 1741, and 1747. This shows he was quite popular in his area. In 1727, he had to compete in an election, but he still won.

Chafin was known for always voting against the government's main leaders from 1715 onwards. This means he often disagreed with the people in power.

Financial Challenges

Later in his life, George Chafin faced some money problems. By 1748, he was having financial difficulties. He even had to get special permission from Parliament to sell some of his family's land. This was to help him pay off his debts.

In 1753, he decided not to run for election again. People said he was "ruined in his affairs" because of his money troubles. He did not stand for election in 1754. His financial problems continued, and in 1757, he had to sell even more of his estates.

George Chafin passed away on September 7, 1766. He had five sons and three daughters.
