Early Life and Political Career

George Villiers was born in London on April 4, 1808. His parents were George Child Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey, and Lady Sarah Fane.

He became a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's government. He represented different areas, including Rochester from 1830 to 1831, Minehead from 1831 to 1832, and Honiton from 1832 to 1835. He also represented Weymouth & Melcombe Regis from 1837 to 1842 and Cirencester from 1844 to 1852.

In 1838, he served as a Lord-in-waiting to the Duchess of Cambridge. This was during the coronation of Queen Victoria. A Lord-in-waiting is a person who attends to a royal family member.

His Family

Lord Jersey married Julia Peel on July 12, 1841. Julia was the daughter of Sir Robert Peel, who was a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Julia passed away in 1893.

George and Julia had three children:

  • Julia Sarah Alice Child Villiers (died 1921); she married Sir George Orby Wombwell, 4th Baronet in 1861 and had children.
  • Caroline Anne Child-Villiers; she married William Henry Philips Jenkins in 1872.
  • Victor Albert George Child-Villiers, 7th Earl of Jersey (1845–1915).

George became the Earl of Jersey when his father died on October 3, 1859. However, he only held the title for a short time. He passed away just three weeks later, on October 24, 1859. He died from tuberculosis in Brighton. He was buried in Middleton Stoney, Oxfordshire.

His wife, Lady Jersey, later married Charles Brandling in 1865.
