George Alan Cleveland (born September 17, 1885 – died July 15, 1957) was a Canadian actor. He was famous for appearing in many films and TV shows. George Cleveland acted in over 180 movies during his career.

George Cleveland's Acting Career

George Cleveland was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. He started acting on stage when he was a teenager. One of his first plays was called The Octaroon.

Before becoming a film star, George Cleveland performed in Vaudeville. This was a popular type of entertainment with different acts. It included singing, dancing, comedy, and acting.

Moving to Hollywood

In 1936, George Cleveland moved to Hollywood. This is where many movies are made. He worked in films as an actor. He also helped produce and direct some movies.

His Most Famous Role: Gramps Miller

George Cleveland acted in more than 150 films. But he was most known for his role as George "Gramps" Miller. This was in the popular American TV show Lassie.

He played Gramps Miller in the first three seasons of Lassie (1954–1956). He also appeared in the first 12 episodes of the fourth season (1957).

George Cleveland passed away on July 15, 1957. He was 71 years old. His death was written into the Lassie storyline. In the 13th episode of the fourth season, Gramps Miller also passed away. This led to the family selling their farm and moving away.

Personal Life

George Cleveland died from a heart attack in Burbank, California. He was married to Dorothy Melleck. They married in 1955. Before that, he was married to Victory Bateman. They met while performing in Vaudeville.
