George Coe (born George Julian Cohen; May 10, 1929 – July 18, 2015) was an American actor. He was one of the first cast members on the famous TV show Saturday Night Live. He also lent his voice to the character Woodhouse in the animated series Archer.

George Coe was born in Jamaica, Queens, a part of New York City.

Acting Career

George Coe had a long and successful career in acting, performing in plays, movies, and TV shows.

Broadway Plays

His career on Broadway (the famous theater district in New York City) started in 1957. He played important roles in several popular musicals. For example, he was "M. Lindsey Woolsey" in the original play Mame. He also played "Owen O'Malley" in On The Twentieth Century and created the role of David in Company.

Saturday Night Live

In 1975, George Coe became one of the very first cast members of Saturday Night Live (often called SNL). This show is famous for its comedy sketches. He was only officially listed as a cast member for the very first episode. Even though he appeared in other episodes, his name wasn't listed again.

Movies and TV Shows

George Coe acted in many movies. In 1979, he was in the movie Kramer vs. Kramer, which won an Academy Award (a very important movie award). He was even nominated for an Academy Award himself for a short film called The Dove in 1968. He also helped direct that film.

He appeared in many TV shows over the years. Some of these include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Murder, She Wrote, Bones, The Golden Girls, and Grey's Anatomy. He played Ben Cheviot in the series Max Headroom.

Voice Acting

George Coe was also a talented voice actor. He was the voice of Woodhouse, a character in the animated TV series Archer. He also voiced the Autobot character Wheeljack in the movie Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Besides movies and TV, he did voice work for video games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2.

Death

George Coe passed away on July 18, 2015, in Santa Monica, California. He was 86 years old and had been ill for a while. The eighth season of the TV show Archer was dedicated to him.
