George Boyle Hanna Currie (born December 19, 1905 – died January 20, 1978) was an important person from Northern Ireland. He was a barrister, which is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court. He was also a politician, meaning he helped make decisions for the country.

Early Life and Education

George Currie was born in Belfast, Ireland. He went to school at Campbell College in Belfast. After that, he studied at Trinity College Dublin. There, he earned several degrees, including one in law.

He then trained to become a barrister. He joined a famous legal society called the Middle Temple in 1932. This allowed him to practice law in England. He worked as a lawyer in Liverpool.

A Career in Law and Politics

George Currie was interested in helping his community. He became involved in local politics. He was elected to the council in Wirral. This is a local government group that makes decisions for a town or area. He even served as the Chairman of the Council from 1938 to 1939.

Serving in the War

During the Second World War, George Currie joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. This was a group of people who volunteered to help the Royal Air Force during the war. He worked with important leaders like Lord Dowding. Later, he moved to the legal part of the Air Force.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

After the war, George Currie wanted to serve his country in a bigger way. He decided to run for a seat in the UK Parliament. In 1950 and 1951, he ran as a candidate for the Conservative Party in an area called East Flintshire. However, he didn't win these elections.

Then, he was chosen to run in North Down. This area is in Northern Ireland. The person who was the MP there, Patricia Ford, was leaving her job. George Currie won the election in May 1955. He became the new Member of Parliament for North Down.

Representing North Down

George Currie worked hard for the people of North Down. He easily won his elections and kept his seat in Parliament for fifteen years. He spoke in Parliament about important topics. For example, he gave his first speech about helping the fishing industry.

He continued to represent North Down until 1970. At that time, he decided to retire from Parliament. James Kilfedder took over his role as the MP for North Down. George Currie passed away in 1978.
