George Dumitrescu (born April 22, 1901 – died October 22, 1972) was an important Romanian poet. He was known for his beautiful poems for adults and also wrote fun verses especially for children.

George Dumitrescu was a talented writer from Romania. He spent his life writing poems and teaching others about literature. He even wrote books that were perfect for young readers like you!

His Early Life and School Days

George Dumitrescu was born in a place called Cocioc, in Ilfov County, Romania. When he was older, he went to high school in Ploiești. One of his teachers there was a famous writer named Ioan A. Bassarabescu.

After high school, George went to the University of Bucharest. He studied literature and philosophy, which means he learned a lot about books, stories, and how people think. He finished his studies in 1924 and later earned a special doctorate degree in 1938.

Starting His Writing Journey

George Dumitrescu began his career as a teacher. From 1925 to 1931, he was a teaching assistant for Mihail Dragomirescu at the university. He also taught in high schools, sharing his love for words with students.

His first poems were published in a magazine called Convorbiri Literare in 1920. This was his very first time having his work printed! In the same year, he released his first small book of poems, simply titled Poezii.

Writing for All Ages

George Dumitrescu wrote many poetry books for adults. Some of his well-known collections include Primăveri scuturate (1924), Cântece pentru madona mică (1926), and Priveliști (1928). He also wrote Elegii (1933) and Zăpezi și purpură (1936).

Besides writing poems, George Dumitrescu also worked as an editor. He was in charge of a magazine called Ritmul vremii from 1925 to 1929. He also wrote about other writers' works, sharing his thoughts on literature. For example, he wrote a book about the poet Panait Cerna called Poezia lui Cerna (1939).

Awards and Recognition

George Dumitrescu's talent was recognized with several important awards. In 1927, he won a prize from the Romanian Academy. Later, in 1934, he received an award from the Romanian Writers' Society. These awards showed how much his work was valued.

George Dumitrescu passed away in Bucharest on October 22, 1972. He left behind a wonderful collection of poems for everyone to enjoy.
