A Life of Learning and Leadership

George Duthie was born in Woodside, Aberdeen, Scotland. This was in 1865. He became a very respected mathematician. In 1899, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a special group for top thinkers in Scotland. He also led the Edinburgh Mathematical Society in 1901.

Later, George Duthie moved to Rhodesia. This country is now known as Zimbabwe. There, he became the Director of Education. This meant he was in charge of all schools. He also helped with important government jobs. He was the Government Statistician, which means he collected and understood numbers about the country. He also helped keep track of births, deaths, and the national census. A census counts all the people in a country.

George Duthie passed away in 1921. He died in Salisbury, Rhodesia.

To remember George Duthie, a building was named after him. It is called Duthie House. You can find it at Chaplin High School in Zimbabwe.
