George Granville Francis Egerton, 2nd Earl of Ellesmere (born June 15, 1823 – died September 19, 1862) was an important British nobleman and politician. He was known as Viscount Brackley before he became an Earl. George Egerton was part of the Conservative Party, a major political group in the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Family
George Egerton was the oldest son of Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere. His family was well-known and important. He went to two famous universities: Christ Church, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge.
On April 29, 1846, George married Lady Mary Campbell. She was the daughter of the 1st Earl Cawdor. They had two sons together. Their first son was Francis Charles Granville (1847–1914). Their second son was Alfred John Francis (1854–1890). Alfred later became a Member of Parliament for Eccles.
Political Journey
In 1847, Lord Brackley became a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the British Parliament. He represented North Staffordshire. He held this position until 1851. He decided to leave Parliament because he was not in good health.
In 1857, George inherited his father's important titles. This meant he became the 2nd Earl of Ellesmere. When he passed away in 1862, his oldest son, Francis, took over his titles.
