George Francis O'Shaunessy (May 1, 1868 – November 28, 1934) was an American politician. He was born in 1868 in Galway, Ireland. When he was four years old, his family moved to New York in 1872.

After studying law at Columbia College Law School, he became a lawyer in New York in 1889. He worked for the government as a lawyer. From 1904 to 1905, he was a deputy attorney general for New York. This meant he helped the state with legal issues. In 1906, he became an assistant corporation counsel for New York City. In this role, he gave legal advice to the city government.

Moving to Rhode Island

In 1907, George O'Shaunessy moved to Rhode Island. He soon became involved in politics there.

Serving in Congress

In 1910, he was elected to the United States Congress. He represented Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District. As a member of the Democratic Party, he served as a Representative. A Representative is someone elected to speak for the people in their district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

He stayed in Congress until 1919. In 1918, he decided not to run for re-election. Instead, he tried to become a U.S. Senator, but he did not win that election.

After Congress

After leaving Congress, President Woodrow Wilson gave O'Shaunessy a new job. He was appointed as the collector of internal revenue for Rhode Island. This meant he was in charge of collecting taxes for the federal government in that area.

He held this position until President Wilson left office in 1921. After that, George O'Shaunessy went back to working as a private lawyer.

Later Life and Death

George O'Shaunessy passed away in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1934. He was buried in St. Francis Cemetery in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
