Sir George Fermor (died 1612) was an important English soldier and landowner. He lived during the time of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. His family home was Easton Neston.
George Fermor was the son of Sir John Fermor and Maud Vaux. Maud was the daughter of Nicholas Vaux, 1st Baron Vaux of Harrowden. George Fermor was a brave soldier. He fought in the Netherlands. In 1586, he was made a knight by the Earl of Leicester. This was a special honor given by the King or Queen. Later, in 1589, he became the Sheriff of Northamptonshire. A sheriff was a very important local official. They helped keep law and order in the county.
A Royal Visit to Easton Neston
On June 27, 1603, Sir George Fermor had a very special day. He hosted King James VI and I and Queen Anne of Denmark at his home, Easton Neston. The King and Queen were traveling from Scotland to London. This was a huge event for Sir George and his family. Many important lords and ladies came with the King and Queen.
The King even knighted Sir George's oldest son, Hatton Fermor, during the visit. Lady Anne Clifford, a famous writer of the time, wrote about the day. She said there were "an infinite company of Lords and Ladies, and other people." She also noted that the local area could barely find places for everyone to stay. After their visit, the royal party moved on to Grafton Regis.
Sir George's Family
In 1572, Sir George Fermor married Mary Curzon. Mary had been a lady-in-waiting to Elizabeth I of England. This meant she helped the Queen in her daily life. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Curzon and Agnes Hussey. Sir George and Mary had several children together.
Their Children
- Hatton Fermor (died 1640): He was the eldest son. King James I knighted him during the royal visit. Hatton married Elizabeth Anderson and later Anna Cockayne. His eldest son became Sir William Fermor, 1st Baronet.
- Robert Fermor (born around 1582, died 1616): Robert had family lands in Ireland. His son, Major Jasper Farmar Sr., later moved to Pennsylvania in America.
- Agnes Fermor (died 1617): Agnes married Sir Richard Wenman of Thame Park.
- Elizabeth Fermor: She married Sir William Stafford. Later, she married Sir Thomas Chamberlayne, who was a judge.
- Jane Fermor (died 1638): Jane married Sir John Killigrew of Falmouth Castle.
- Catherine Fermor: She married William Hoby of Hailes.
- Anne (or Mary) Fermor: She married Robert Crichton, 8th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar. Later, she married Barnabas O'Brien, 6th Earl of Thomond. She was a supporter of the writer Owen Feltham.
