George FitzMaurice, known as Viscount Kirkwall, during his time as a captain in the 71st Highlanders in the Crimea.

George William Hamilton FitzMaurice, 6th Earl of Orkney (born 6 May 1827 – died 21 October 1889) was an important Scottish nobleman and a soldier. Before 1877, he was known as Viscount Kirkwall.

George FitzMaurice was the son of Thomas FitzMaurice, 5th Earl of Orkney and Charlotte Irby. He married Amelia de Samuel in London in 1872. They did not have any children.

A Life in the Military

George FitzMaurice had an interesting career as a soldier. In 1853, he became a Captain in the 71st Highlanders Regiment. Before this, he was part of the 92nd Regiment.

He took part in the Crimean War in 1855. This was a big war fought in the area around the Black Sea. After the war, in 1856, he moved to the Scots Fusilier Guards. He then left the army in 1857.

When he passed away in London, his title went to his nephew. His nephew became Edmond FitzMaurice, 7th Earl of Orkney.
