Thomas John Hamilton FitzMaurice, the 5th Earl of Orkney, was an important Scottish nobleman. He was born on August 8, 1803, and passed away on May 16, 1877. He held a special role in the Scottish Parliament for many years.
About Thomas FitzMaurice
His Early Life
Thomas John Hamilton FitzMaurice was the son of John FitzMaurice, Viscount Kirkwall, and Anna Maria Blaquiere. His family was quite involved in politics. For example, his father served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for different areas. Thomas also had a brother, William FitzMaurice, who was an MP for Buckinghamshire.
His grandparents were Mary FitzMaurice, who was the 4th Countess of Orkney, and Thomas Fitzmaurice. Thomas's great-uncle was William Petty-FitzMaurice, who became the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne. This great-uncle was a very important person. He even served as the British Prime Minister under King George III. He helped bring peace and end the American War of Independence.
His Career in Parliament
Thomas FitzMaurice became the Earl of Orkney on December 30, 1831. He took over this title from his grandmother, Mary.
One of his main jobs was serving as a Representative Peer for Scotland. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland in the British Parliament. He held this important position for a long time, from January 14, 1833, until January 26, 1874.
His Family Life
On March 14, 1826, Thomas FitzMaurice married Charlotte Irby. She was the daughter of George Irby, the 3rd Baron Boston. Thomas and Charlotte had eight children together.
Their eldest son was George William Hamilton FitzMaurice, who later became the 6th Earl of Orkney. He took over his father's title after Thomas passed away.
Lord Orkney died on May 16, 1877. He was buried in a place called Latteragh graveyard in County Tipperary, Ireland.
