George Fletcher (1890-1973) was a famous cowboy and rodeo star. He grew up near Pendleton, Oregon. In 1911, he earned second place in the exciting Pendleton Round-Up Rodeo. Later, in 1969, he became one of the first people honored in the Pendleton Round-Up Hall of Fame. His amazing skills were also recognized in 2001. That year, he joined the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

George Fletcher spent his early years near Pendleton, Oregon. He learned a lot about horses by working on nearby ranches. He also worked on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. When he was 16, he entered his very first rodeo competition.

Rodeo Career

George Fletcher made history at the 1911 Pendleton Round-Up. He was the first African American to compete for a world championship in bronco riding. Bronco riding is a tough rodeo event where riders try to stay on a wild, bucking horse.

The judges did not give him the championship saddle. However, the crowd strongly believed he was the best. They cheered for him and called him the "People's Champion."

George Fletcher's Legacy

George Fletcher's impact is still remembered today. In 1969, he was honored by being inducted into the Pendleton Round-Up Hall of Fame. Years later, in 2001, he was also inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

A special bronze statue of George Fletcher stands in Pendleton, Oregon. It was created by artist Jerry Werner. This statue was the first one in Pendleton to honor an African American. It was put up in 2014 on Main Street. Many groups donated money to help pay for this important statue. It is part of the Pendleton Bronze Trail, which features several bronze statues.

In 2019, a book was published about George Fletcher's life. It is called "Let 'Er Buck! George Fletcher, The People's Champion." This book tells a fictional story based on his experiences.
