George Frederick Addison (1889-1954) was a talented Australian architect. He designed many important and beautiful buildings in Brisbane, Queensland. These buildings are now protected as heritage sites because of their special history and design.
George Frederick Addison was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on October 10, 1889. His father, George Henry Male Addison, was also a famous architect. George studied architecture at the Brisbane Central Technical College.

A Brave Soldier in World War I
George Addison was a soldier during the First World War. He joined the Australian Army in 1914. He fought in a famous battle called Gallipoli, where he was injured. He also served in other countries like Egypt and France.
His Amazing Architecture Career
After the war, George Addison started working with his father in 1919. Their company was called G H M Addison and Son. He likely finished the designs for the Bulimba and Hawthorn ferry terminals that his father had started.
From 1928 to 1946, George worked with another architect, H.S. MacDonald. Together, they designed many well-known buildings. Some of their important projects include:
- Marist Brothers Monastery and School in Rosalie (1929)
- A large storage building and offices for Castlemaine Perkins (1928-1929)
- The English Scottish & Australian Bank Building
- The Queensland National Bank Building in South Brisbane (1929)
- Several buildings at Brisbane's Doomben racecourse, like the totaliser (1932)
- The Mt Thompson Crematorium (1934)
- Renovations for many Castlemaine Perkins hotels, including the Hotel Orient and Belfast Hotel in Brisbane (from 1937)
- The Goondiwindi Civic Centre (1937)
George Addison also worked with M.L. Conrad to design the grandstand at Eagle Farm racecourse.
Other Important Roles
George Addison was the President of the Johnsonian Club from 1938 to 1939. He was also a director for the Castlemaine Perkins company.
His Family Life
George Addison married Miriam Urquhart in 1921. He passed away on December 10, 1954. He was survived by his wife and their son, Peter George Addison.
