George H. Carroll Lion Habitat facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The George H. Carroll Lion Habitat is a special home for lions at the University of North Alabama. It's a big, indoor space, about 12,764 square feet. This habitat is unique because it houses Leo III, the only live lion mascot in the entire United States! The habitat opened on October 7, 2007. It's named after George H. Carroll, whose company helped build it without using government money or student fees.

Building and Caring for the Lions

The lion habitat cost about $1.3 million to build. It takes a lot of money to feed and care for the lions every year. This costs around $35,000 annually. All the money needed to keep the lions healthy comes from donations. People who love the lions give money to help.

Safety First

The habitat has a very advanced alarm system. It also has cameras that watch the lions all the time. This system helps keep the lions safe and healthy.

Meeting High Standards

The lion habitat follows strict rules from two important groups. These are the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). These groups make sure that animals in zoos and habitats are cared for very well.

A Long Tradition

The University of North Alabama has had a live lion mascot since 1973. That's when the university president, Dr. Robert Guillot, brought a small lion cub to campus. This cub became Leo I.

Celebrating Leo's Birthday

Leo I was born on April 14. Now, every year on April 14, the university celebrates the lion mascot's birthday! Many young children from nearby schools come to join the fun.

Meet Leo III

The current lions, Leo III and Una, are siblings. They were born on November 18, 2002. They came from a special animal refuge in Greenville, New Hampshire. This refuge is approved by the USDA.
