George Hamilton-Gordon, 6th Earl of Aberdeen facts for kids
George Hamilton-Gordon, 6th Earl of Aberdeen (born 10 December 1841 – died 27 January 1870) was a Scottish nobleman and a sailor. He was known as Lord Haddo from 1860 until 1864.
Early Life and Adventures
George Hamilton-Gordon was born into an important Scottish family. Even though he was a nobleman, he chose a life of adventure at sea. He spent some time living in Richmond, Maine, in the United States. While there, he took on regular jobs, like cutting ice and working in a store. This showed he was willing to work hard and experience life outside of his noble background.
A Sailor's Life
George loved the sea and became a sailor. He often started his voyages from Richmond, Maine. At one point, he even became the captain of a small ship named the Walton (or Waltham). His family back home knew about his life at sea because he would write letters to his mother and brother, keeping them updated on his adventures.
Tragic End at Sea
In 1870, George Hamilton-Gordon was traveling from Boston to Melbourne, Australia, on a ship called the Hera. During the journey, the ship was caught in a very strong storm. Sadly, he was swept overboard by a huge wave and drowned. Reports said he was trying to take down a large sail, called a boom sail, when the accident happened. He could have asked another crew member to do this dangerous task, but he chose to do it himself.
Family Succession
George's death was a great loss. Just two years before, his younger brother had died in a rifle accident. Because of these tragedies, George was succeeded as Earl of Aberdeen by his next younger brother, John.
