George Hartgill, also known as Hartgyll, was an English astronomer who was active around the year 1594. He was well-known during the time of Elizabeth I, who was the Queen of England.
A Star Expert in Queen Elizabeth's Time
George Hartgill was highly respected for his deep knowledge of the stars. He was also skilled in astrology, which was a popular practice back then. Astrology involved studying the positions of stars and planets to try and understand or predict future events.
Hartgill called himself a "minister of the word." This suggests that he might have been a Protestant preacher. A preacher is someone who teaches about religious beliefs.
Hartgill's Famous Book: Generall Calendars
In 1594, George Hartgill published an important book called Generall Calendars. This book was dedicated to William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester. Dedicating a book means he wrote it in honor of this important person.
Hartgill dated his book "from my Studie at your Lordshippe's Manor of Checkerell." This means he wrote it from his study at the manor of Checkerell, which is now known as Chickerell in Dorset, England. He finished the book on the last day of August in 1594.
His book was so popular that a second edition was published many years later, in 1656. This later edition was put out by T. & J. Gadbury.
