Colonel George Hay, 16th Earl of Erroll (born May 13, 1767 – died June 14, 1798) was a Scottish noble and a soldier. He held the title of Earl of Erroll, which is a very old noble title in Scotland.
Early Life of George Hay
George Hay was the oldest son of James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll. His mother was Isabella Carr. She came from a family in Northumberland, England.
George had an older half-sister, Lady Mary Hay. She was from his father's first marriage. He also had a younger brother named William. William later became the 17th Earl of Erroll.
George's grandparents were William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and Lady Anne Livingston.
Military Career and Titles
In 1778, when George was just 11 years old, his father passed away. This meant George inherited the title and became the 16th Earl of Erroll.
He joined the British Army in 1780. He started as a Cornet in the 7th Dragoons. A Cornet was a junior officer who carried the flag.
He quickly moved up the ranks:
- In 1786, he became a Captain in the 5th Dragoons.
- By 1792, he was a Captain in the 58th Regiment of Foot.
- In 1793, he became a Major in the 78th Regiment of Foot.
- By 1795, he was a Colonel in the 1st Regiment of Foot.
From 1796 until his death in 1798, he was a Representative Peer for Scotland. This meant he was chosen by other Scottish nobles to represent them in the British Parliament.
Personal Life
On January 25, 1790, Lord Erroll married Elizabeth Jemima Blake. She was from a family in Ireland. Her sister, Joanna Harriet Blake, was the mother of Sir Dominick Daly. He later became a governor in Canada and Australia.
Lord Erroll passed away on June 14, 1798, at the age of 31. Since he had no children, his younger brother, William, became the 17th Earl of Erroll.
His wife, Elizabeth, was known as the Dowager Countess of Erroll after his death. This title is given to the widow of an Earl. She later remarried in 1816 to John Hookham Frere. Elizabeth passed away in 1831.
