William Hay, 17th Earl of Erroll (born March 12, 1772 – died January 26, 1819) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was also known as Lord Hay until he was six years old. He held several important positions in Scotland during his lifetime.

William Hay's Early Life

William Hay was born in 1772. His father was James Hay, 15th Earl of Erroll. His mother was Isabella Carr. William had an older sister named Lady Augusta Hay. He also had a half-sister, Lady Mary Hay, from his father's first marriage.

Important Roles and Career

In 1798, William Hay became the Earl of Erroll. This happened after his older brother, George, passed away without having any children.

Serving Scotland

William Hay held several important jobs for Scotland:

  • From 1805 to 1809, he was the Knight Marischal of Scotland. This was an important ceremonial role.
  • He also served as a Representative Peer for Scotland. This meant he represented Scotland's nobility in the British Parliament. He did this from 1806 to 1807, and again from 1818 to 1819. He was part of the Whig political group.
  • From 1817 until his death in 1819, he was the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. This role involved representing the King or Queen at the annual meeting of the Church of Scotland.
