Biography of Francis Scott Napier
Francis Scott Napier was born in Ipswich in 1758. His father was William Napier, who later became the 7th Lord Napier. Francis inherited his father's noble title on January 2, 1775.
Early Army Career
Napier joined the army in 1774. He was first part of the 31st Foot regiment. He was promoted to a lieutenant in 1776. He served in Canada with General Burgoyne.
American Revolutionary War
Napier fought in the American Revolutionary War. He was part of General Burgoyne's army, known as the Convention Army. This army was defeated and surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. After being held captive, he was released. In 1779, he bought a higher rank, becoming a captain in the 35th Foot regiment. He later moved to the 4th Foot in 1784 and soon became a major.
Public Life and Honors
From 1788 to 1790, Napier held an important position. He was the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. This is a leader of a group called Freemasons. In 1789, he helped lay the foundation stone for new buildings at the University of Edinburgh. For this, he was given a special law degree called a Doctor of Laws (LLD).
He was chosen several times to be a Representative peer. This meant he represented Scottish noblemen in the British Parliament. He served as the Lord Lieutenant of Selkirkshire from 1797 until his death. This role meant he was the King's representative in that area. From 1802 until his death, he was also chosen as the Lord High Commissioner. This person represents the King at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
Napier passed away at his home in Enfield in 1823. His oldest son, William, then inherited his title.
Family Life
On April 13, 1784, Francis Scott Napier married Maria Margaret Clavering. They were married at St George's, Hanover Square. Maria was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Sir John Clavering. Francis and Maria had five daughters and four sons. Their son, William John, later became the 9th Lord Napier.
