Early Life and Family
George Hickes was born in Churchill, Manitoba. He comes from a family with a history of public service and sports.
His father, George Hickes, Sr., was also a politician. He served as the speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. His cousin, Hunter Tootoo, was a Member of Parliament for Nunavut. Another cousin, Jordin Tootoo, is a famous ice hockey player.
Before being elected, Hickes worked for the government of Nunavut as a civil servant. He also worked as a communications manager for Qulliq Energy, the company that provides electricity to the territory.
Joining the Legislative Assembly
In 2013, Hickes was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut for the first time. In a surprising victory, he won the election against Eva Aariak, who was the Premier at the time. The Premier is the head of the government in a territory or province.
In 2021, the people of Iqaluit-Tasiluk re-elected him to continue representing them in the 6th Legislative Assembly.
