George Everard Hill (born on May 20, 1942) is a famous Australian chef, teacher, and writer. He is known as one of Australia's top chefs. George Hill is one of only seven "Black Hat Chefs" in Australia. This is a very special title for chefs. He was also named a "Pioneer" in 2004 by Les Toques Blanches, which means "The White Hats." This group is for executive chefs in Australia.

George Hill's Amazing Career
George Hill has had many important jobs in his career. He has been a chef in different roles, a cooking teacher, and a manager for cooking education. He has also worked as a hospitality expert and owned his own business.
Starting His Culinary Journey
George began his cooking journey in 1956. He started as an apprentice cook at the Cumberland Hotel in London. An apprentice is someone who learns a skill by working with an expert. In 1966, he moved to Australia. He became an Australian citizen in 1979. His first job in Australia was as a chef at the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) Club in Melbourne.
Teaching and Leading in Cookery
In 1971, George started teaching. He became a commercial cookery teacher at the William Angliss Institute of TAFE in Melbourne. He was so good that he eventually led a team of over thirty teachers in the food department. Later, he was promoted to one of the college's program managers.
Awards and Recognition
George Hill has received many awards for his work.
- In 1983, he won the Australian Foodservice Manufacturers Association Award. This award goes to people who have done the most for the food industry.
- In 1994, he was added to the National Association of Foodservice Equipment Suppliers Hall of Fame. This recognized his important work as an educator in the hospitality industry.
- In 1986, George moved to the new Chisholm Institute in Victoria. There, he became the head of the Tourism and Hospitality Faculty.
Running a Five-Star Lodge
George Hill also owned and ran Rosehill Lodge. This was a five-star bed and breakfast especially for "foodies," which are people who love food. It was recognized as a finalist in the Victorian Tourism Awards twice, in 1999 and 2000.

- In 1988, he received a Churchill Fellowship. This allowed him to travel and learn more about his field.

- He was the Director of the World Championships in Commercial Cookery held in Melbourne.

Helping Chefs Learn and Grow
George Hill has worked hard to help other chefs learn and improve. He created several websites for Australian chefs, like SalonCulinaire.com, AusChef.com, and Chefpedia.org. He also started the Australian Culinary Code of Practices for commercial chefs. These rules help chefs work to high standards. Every professional chefs' association in Australia has adopted these codes.
When George Hill created salonculinaire.com two years ago it soon became popular as a tool assisting with the preservation of culinary standards and encouraging debate on culinary issues between the 450 registered chefs. Many projects have been achieved, but the most significant was the creation of the Australian Culinary Codes of Practice.”
In 2024, George Hill was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. This is a very high honor. He received it for his "significant service to the culinary industry as a chef and educator, and to the community."
