The Historic George M. Cannon House
The George M. Cannon House stands as a reminder of the past. It shows the style of homes built over a century ago. The house is located in an area once known as Forest Dale.
Who Was George M. Cannon?
George M. Cannon was an important person in Salt Lake City's history. In 1889, he bought a large piece of land called Forest Farm. This land used to belong to Brigham Young, a famous leader in Utah.
George M. Cannon then divided this land into smaller plots to create a new neighborhood called Forest Dale. Later, Forest Dale became its own small town from 1902 to 1912. Eventually, it became part of Salt Lake City again.
Interestingly, Brigham Young's original farmhouse from Forest Farm was moved in 1975. It was taken to the This Is the Place Heritage Park to be preserved and restored.
A Recognized Historic Building
Because of its history and unique architecture, the George M. Cannon House is officially recognized as an important landmark. On July 18, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This is a list of places in the United States that are considered worthy of preservation because of their historical significance.
The George M. Cannon House is special because it's the only building in the Forest Dale Historic District that is listed on the NRHP by itself. The entire Forest Dale Historic District was added to the NRHP later, on April 23, 2009.
The House Today
Today, the George M. Cannon House has a new life as the Parrish Place Bed and Breakfast. A bed and breakfast is a type of small hotel where guests can stay overnight and enjoy breakfast.
The name "Parrish Place" comes from the famous artist Maxfield Parrish. Each guest room in the house is named after one of his paintings. The current owners, Jeff and Karin Gauvin, bought the house in 2006. Their journey to purchase this historic home was even shown on the TV show House Hunters.
