What is the Forest Dale Historic District?

The Forest Dale Historic District protects an important part of Salt Lake City's past. It includes the main area of the Forest Dale Subdivision. This subdivision was first planned out in 1890. The district also covers the larger Town of Forest Dale. This town was officially created in 1902. It later became part of Salt Lake City again in 1912.

Who Started Forest Dale?

Both the subdivision and the town were created by a man named George Mousley Cannon. He was born in 1861 and passed away in 1937. George M. Cannon was part of the famous Cannon family. This family was very important in politics in the Intermountain West region.

The land for Forest Dale was originally a large farm. It was called Forest Farm. George M. Cannon bought this land in 1889. He bought it from the family of Brigham Young, who was a very important leader in Utah's history.
