George Hubbard Makgill (born January 7, 1934, died January 3, 2003) was a Scottish nobleman. He held the title of the 13th Viscount of Oxfuird. A 'Viscount' is a type of noble title, like a Duke or Earl, but usually a bit lower in rank. He was also the leader, or 'Chief,' of the Makgill family, a historic Scottish clan. George Makgill inherited his title from his uncle.

He played an important role in the House of Lords, which is part of the UK's Parliament. He was a deputy speaker and helped lead meetings there. In 1999, many noble titles lost their automatic right to be in the House of Lords. However, George Makgill was one of 92 hereditary peers who were elected to keep their seats.

The House of Lords and Hereditary Peers

The House of Lords is one of the two parts of the UK Parliament. It helps make laws and check the government. For a long time, many members of the House of Lords were 'hereditary peers.' This meant they inherited their right to be in Parliament from their family.

In 1999, a new law changed this system. Most hereditary peers lost their automatic right to sit in the House of Lords. However, 92 of them were allowed to stay. They were chosen by other hereditary peers through an election. George Makgill was one of these elected members. He continued to serve in the House of Lords until his death in 2003.

Family Life

Lord Oxfuird was married two times during his life. His first wife was Alison Jensen. Together, they had four sons. Sadly, one of their sons passed away just two days after he was born.

Their children from his first marriage were:

  • Richard Makgill (born and died in 1967)
  • Ian Alexander Arthur Makgill, who became the 14th Viscount of Oxfuird (born in 1969)
  • Hon. Robert Edward George Makgill (1969–2015)
  • Hon. Hamish Max Alastair Makgill (born in 1972)

Later, George Makgill married his second wife, Venetia Steward. They had one son together:

  • Hon. Edward Anthony Donald Makgill (born in 1983)
