Frederick George Merritt (born December 10, 1890 – died September 27, 1977) was an English actor. He worked in theatre, films, and television. He often played characters who were in charge, like police officers or military leaders.

Early Life and War Experience

George Merritt was born in Greenwich, London, England. Before he became a famous actor, he studied German theatre in Magdeburg, Germany. When World War I began in 1914, he was teaching at the Berlitz School. Because he was British, he was held as a civilian prisoner of war. He was kept in a camp called Ruhleben from 1914 to 1918. Even as a prisoner, George Merritt stayed busy with acting. He was involved in more than 50 plays while he was at Ruhleben. After the war, he lived for many years in Lissenden Gardens in north west London.

Acting Career in Film and Theatre

George Merritt had a very long acting career that lasted from 1930 to 1974. He appeared in many films and television shows. He was known for playing characters who were figures of authority. These roles included police inspectors, military officers, and other people in charge. Some of his notable film appearances include The Lodger (1932), Young and Innocent (1937), and A Canterbury Tale (1944). He also acted in stage plays, such as Grand Hotel in 1931 and Party Manners in 1950. His career showed his dedication to acting, performing in many different types of productions over more than 40 years.
