George John Milles was an important figure in English society. He was a member of the nobility, meaning he held a special title and had a role in public life. His life included time as a soldier, a local official, and a landowner.
Early Life and Family
George was the second son of Lewis Watson, who was the 2nd Baron Sondes. His mother was Mary Milles. When he was 17, in 1811, he started studying at Christ Church, Oxford University.
In 1820, George changed his last name to Milles. He did this to honor his mother's family, as requested in his grandfather Richard Milles's will. He also inherited a large estate in North Elmham, Norfolk, from his grandfather. Later, he married Eleanor Knatchbull. She was the fifth daughter of Sir Edward Knatchbull.
A Soldier's Path
George began his military career in 1812. He joined the Royal Horse Guards as a cornet, which was a junior officer rank. By 1814, he was promoted to lieutenant.
He bravely fought in the famous Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This battle was a very important event in history. George left the army in May 1816.
Public Service and Later Life
After his time in the army, George continued to serve his community. In 1826, he became a captain in the Norfolk Yeomanry Cavalry, a local military force. He was promoted to major in this group in 1831.
In 1830, George served as the High Sheriff of Norfolk. This was an important role where he was the chief law enforcement officer for the county.
In 1836, George's older brother passed away. This meant George inherited the title and became the 4th Baron Sondes. Later that year, he joined the Royal East Kent Yeomanry as a captain. He attended the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838, showing his respect to the new Queen.
George John Milles passed away on December 17, 1874. His oldest son, George Milles, 1st Earl Sondes, took over his title.
