George Murnaghan (born July 4, 1847 – died January 13, 1929) was an important Irish Nationalist politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This means he was elected to represent people in the British government. He represented the Mid Tyrone area from 1895 until 1910.

Early Life and Moving to America

George Murnaghan was born in Ireland in 1847. When he was a young man, in the late 1860s, he decided to move to the United States. He settled in St Louis, Missouri. There, he worked as a housebuilder, helping to construct homes. He also managed a place called a livery stable, which was like a garage for horses and carriages.

While in America, George Murnaghan married Angela Mooney, who was originally from Dublin, Ireland. They had nine children together.

Returning to Ireland

In the late 1880s, George and his wife decided to move back to Ireland. They returned for health reasons. After coming back to his home country, George Murnaghan became involved in politics.

A Career in Politics

George Murnaghan was a strong supporter of Irish nationalism. This was a movement that believed Ireland should have more control over its own affairs and be less controlled by Britain. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Mid Tyrone area in 1895. He continued to serve in this role through several elections until 1910. As an MP, he worked to represent the interests of the people in his constituency and to advance the cause of Irish self-governance.

George Murnaghan had a family with several notable members who also achieved success in different fields. His son, Francis Dominic Murnaghan, became a well-known Irish mathematician. Another son, James Murnaghan, became a judge on the Supreme Court of Ireland, which is the highest court in the country. George's grandson, Francis Dominic Murnaghan, Jr., became a federal judge in the United States. His granddaughter, Sheelagh Murnaghan, also became a Member of Parliament in Northern Ireland.
