James Augustine Murnaghan (born 19 April 1881 – died 20 January 1973) was an important Irish judge. He served as a Judge of the Supreme Court from 1925 to 1953. Before that, he was a Judge of the High Court from 1924 to 1925.

Early Life and Education

James Murnaghan was born in Dublin, Ireland, on April 19, 1881. He grew up in a family with a strong connection to public service. His father, George Murnaghan, was an Irish nationalist politician.

James attended University College Dublin (UCD). He earned degrees from the Royal University of Ireland. He also studied law at the King's Inns. In 1903, he became a Barrister-at-Law, which meant he could argue cases in court.

A Career in Law

Before becoming a judge, James Murnaghan was a professor. From 1911 to 1924, he taught law at UCD Law School. He specialized in subjects like jurisprudence and Roman law. He also taught international law, which deals with rules between countries.

In 1924, James Murnaghan was appointed as a judge. He first served on the High Court. This court handles many different types of legal cases.

Just one year later, in 1925, he moved to the Supreme Court. This is the highest court in Ireland. He served there for many years, until 1953. His long career made him a very respected figure in Irish law.

James Murnaghan was married to Alice Davy. They had three children together. His family was important to him.

In 1973, she established the James Murnaghan Memorial Prize at King's Inns. This prize honors his memory and contributions to law.
