George Philpot facts for kids
George Philpot (who also spelled his name Philpott) was an important English landowner and a friend to the royal court. He lived a long time ago, dying in 1624. He was also a big supporter of musicians.
His home was in a place called Thruxton, Hampshire. George Philpot really liked music and helped a famous composer named Thomas Weelkes. In 1600, he even gave a bell to the local church, St Peter and Paul.
Royal Visits to Thruxton
George Philpot had a special connection with the royal family. In August 1603, King James and his wife, Anne of Denmark, stayed at Philpot's home in Thruxton. They were on a journey from Farnham Castle to Wilton House.
The King and Queen visited Thruxton again on August 28, 1607. Queen Anne was so pleased with George Philpot's musicians that she gave them 20 shillings as a reward! After that, she visited another important person, Lady Mason.
George Philpot's Public Service
Besides being a landowner and a friend to the royals, George Philpot also served his community. In 1621, he became the Sheriff of Hampshire. A sheriff back then was a very important official who helped keep law and order in the county.
