George Portwood was a skilled carpenter and architect who lived a long time ago. He worked mostly in a town called Stamford in England. He also held important jobs in Stamford. For example, he was the Chamberlain in 1736 and later became the Mayor of the town. He passed away around 1744.

  • Pickworth Church Steeple: He helped take down the old, falling-apart steeple of Pickworth Church in Rutland.
  • Woodnewton Bridge: In 1735, he built a bridge at Woodnewton in Northamptonshire. This bridge is no longer standing today.
  • Braunston Church Tower: Portwood rebuilt the tower of Braunston Church in Rutland.
  • Witham on the Hill Church: Between 1737 and 1738, he rebuilt the tower and steeple of Witham on the Hill Church in Lincoln. He designed it to look like older medieval buildings.
