George Richardson was born on August 1, 1831, in Derrylane, Killeshandra, County Cavan, Ireland. He was the son of John and Anne Richardson. He became famous for receiving the Victoria Cross.
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. It is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. George Richardson was an Irish soldier who earned this very special medal.
A True Hero
George Richardson was 27 years old when he showed incredible bravery. He was a private in the 34th Regiment of Foot, which was part of the British Army. This happened during a big rebellion in India, known as the Indian Mutiny.
On April 27, 1859, a very brave act took place. George Richardson was severely wounded during a fight. One of his arms was even disabled. But even with his injury, he bravely faced an enemy soldier. This soldier had a loaded gun. George Richardson managed to fight and capture the armed rebel. His amazing courage earned him the Victoria Cross.
Life After the Army
After his time in the British Army, George Richardson moved to Canada. He settled in Montreal. There, he joined another military group called the 1st Prince of Wales Regiment. This unit is now part of The Canadian Grenadier Guards. He served with them from about 1865 to 1878. During this time, he reached the rank of sergeant.
After his military service, George Richardson retired. He was given a piece of land in Southern Ontario. He lived there for many years. George Richardson passed away in London, Ontario, Canada, on January 28, 1923. He was a true hero who showed amazing courage.
