The George Thorndike House is a historic home located on Maine State Route 73 in South Thomaston, Maine. Built in 1855, it's one of the best examples of a building style called Italianate architecture in the area. People think its design might have come from a famous architect named Benjamin S. Deane. Because it's so special, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Discovering the George Thorndike House

The George Thorndike House is on the east side of Route 73. It's part of a group of old houses built in the late 1800s. This house is two-and-a-half stories tall and made of wood. It has a special roof that slopes on all sides, with a cool square tower called a belvedere on top.

What Makes the House Look Unique?

The outside walls of the house are covered with flat wooden boards. These boards were carved to look like real stone blocks! They were even painted with special sand-filled paint to make the stone look even more real. The corners of the house have decorative blocks, and the roof has a deep overhang with fancy paired brackets.

The windows on the first floor are shaped with a rounded top. They also have decorative tops that look like small shelves with brackets. The front of the house has three main sections. The middle section has the main door, which is covered by a porch. This porch has paired square posts holding up its roof, which also has brackets. A smaller, one-and-a-half story building with a pointed roof connects the house to an old carriage barn.

Who Lived Here?

The house was built in 1855 for George Thorndike. He was a very important person in the area. He built ships and was also a ship's captain.

People believe that the architect Benjamin S. Deane designed this house. He was from Thomaston, Maine, but worked in Bangor. We think he designed it because it looks very similar to other buildings he created. Also, he was known to be connected with the community. When it was built, the George Thorndike House was one of the most stylish and well-designed homes around. It's also one of the few houses in central Maine from that time that has an outside designed to look like rough stone.
