George Ty facts for kids
George Siao Kian Ty (born October 18, 1932 – died November 23, 2018) was a very successful Filipino businessman and banker. He is best known for starting Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company, often called Metrobank. This bank grew to become one of the biggest banks in the Philippines.
Mr. Ty also owned parts of other important companies, like Federal Land, Inc. and the Bank of the Philippine Islands. He even owned the tall G.T. International Tower building in Makati.
Early Life and Career
George Ty was born in Hong Kong in 1932. He later moved to the Philippines. He studied at the University of Santo Tomas.
Mr. Ty started his career in business at a young age. He founded Wellington Flour Mills, which made flour. This was one of his first big business ventures.
Founding Metrobank
One of George Ty's most important achievements was founding the Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company (MBTC) in 1962. He started the bank and served as its general manager. Over the years, Metrobank grew a lot. It became the second largest bank in the Philippines based on its assets and capital.
Mr. Ty was the chairman of Metrobank for many years, from 1975 to 2006. He then became co-chairman in 2006.
Other Business Ventures
Beyond banking, George Ty was involved in many other businesses. He was a very important person in the GT Capital Holdings Inc.. He served as its chairman when it first started in 2007. Later, he became its chairman emeritus, which means he held an honorary leadership role.
He also played a big part in the car industry. Since 1988, Dr. Ty was the chairman of Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation. This company makes Toyota cars in the Philippines. He also led Toyota Autoparts Philippines Corp. for many years.
