George W. Loughman was born in Brownsville, Ohio. His parents were David and Elizabeth Loughman. When he was younger, he worked for a railroad company. Later, he became the president and general manager of a company called Sandage Steel Skein Company. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Serving as Mayor

During his time as mayor of South Bend, the city grew steadily. This means more people moved there and new businesses started. After being mayor, in 1905, he was chosen to lead another company called Columbus Skein & Iron Works. He also served as the president of the South Bend Building and Loan Association. This group helped people get loans to build homes.

Other Public Roles

Before becoming mayor, George Loughman was appointed as the Deputy St. Joseph County Auditor. An auditor is someone who checks financial records. He held this job until 1892. Later, he was elected to be the St. Joseph County Auditor. He served in this important role from 1898 to 1903.
