George Washington Carver High School was a public high school in Chesterfield, Virginia. It was a "segregated" school. This meant only African-American students could attend.

The school closed in 1970. This happened when federal courts ordered all public schools to be "integrated." Integration meant students of all races could attend the same schools.

The Story of Carver High

George Washington Carver High School opened in September 1948. It was formed by combining two older schools. These were D. Webster Davis High and Hickory Hill High. The new school started with 348 students.

A Central School for Students

Hickory Hill High School began in 1915. It was the first high school for African-American students in the county. But it was located far north. D. Webster Davis was far south. Carver High was built in a central spot. This made it easier for students from all over the county to attend. It became the only high school for black children in Chesterfield County.

School Life and Closing

The first class graduated from Carver High in 1949. Students often received textbooks that had been used by white schools. These books were given to Carver after the white schools no longer needed them.

Carver High School closed its doors in 1970. This was part of a big change in the United States. Courts ordered public schools to end segregation. All students, no matter their race, could now go to the same schools.
