George Wilbraham (born March 8, 1779 – died January 24, 1852) was an important English politician from Delamere, Cheshire. He was a member of the Whig party, which was a major political group in Britain at the time. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society, a very respected group for scientists.

George Wilbraham was the oldest son of George Wilbraham, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). He grew up in Delamere Lodge. For his education, he attended Rugby School and later Trinity College, Cambridge, which are both famous schools in England. When his father passed away in 1813, George took over Delamere Lodge.

George Wilbraham's Political Career

George Wilbraham served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for several areas. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's main law-making body, the Parliament.

Serving in Parliament

  • In 1826, he was first elected as an MP for Stockbridge.
  • Then, in 1831, he became the MP for Cheshire.
  • In 1832, a new area called Cheshire South was created, and he was elected to represent it.

High Sheriff of Cheshire

Besides being an MP, George Wilbraham was also chosen as the High Sheriff of Cheshire for 1844–45. A High Sheriff is a very old and important role, mainly involved in keeping law and order in a county.

His Life and Family

George Wilbraham was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. This honor is given to people who have made important contributions to science.

He married Lady Anne Fortescue. She was the daughter of Hugh Fortescue, 1st Earl Fortescue, a noble and important person. George and Lady Anne had five sons together. George Wilbraham passed away in 1852. His oldest son, George Fortescue Wilbraham, continued the family line.
