Kids Encyclopedia Facts

George Wylde (sometimes spelled Wild or Wilde) was an English lawyer and politician. He lived a long time ago, from 1550 to 1616. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is part of the English Parliament, at different times between 1584 and 1611.

Early Life and Family

George Wylde was born in 1550. He was one of the younger sons of Thomas Wylde, a cloth maker from a place called The Commandery in Worcester. George inherited a small amount of land from his father.

George's mother was Ellinor Wall. She was the daughter of George Wall from Droitwich. Through his mother, George received more land in places like Kempsey, Impney, and Droitwich, all in Worcestershire.

A Career in Law and Politics

George Wylde became a lawyer in Worcester. He joined a famous law school called the Inner Temple in November 1567. After studying, he officially became a lawyer.

In 1584, George was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Droitwich. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons, where laws are made.

He continued to be active at the Inner Temple. He became a "bencher" in 1591 and an "auditor" in 1593. These were important roles within the law school. In 1593, he was elected as an MP for Droitwich again.

Around 1595, George became a Justice of the Peace (JP) for Worcestershire. A JP helps keep law and order in their local area. On July 7, 1603, he joined the Council of Marches of Wales. This council helped govern Wales and parts of England.

From 1603 to 1605, he was the treasurer of the Inner Temple. In 1604, he was elected MP for Droitwich for a third time. He took over from his cousin, John Bucke. He also became a "reader" at his Inn in 1607, which meant he taught law. In 1614, he reached a very high position in law, becoming a Serjeant-at-law.

George Wylde passed away when he was 66 years old. He was buried in Droitwich.

His Family's Legacy

George Wylde married Frances Huddleston. Her father was Sir Edmund Huddleston from Sawston Hall in Cambridgeshire.

George and Frances had children who also became important. His sons, John Wylde and George Wylde II, both followed in his footsteps and became Members of Parliament. His daughter, Elizabeth (who lived from 1591 to 1656), married a well-known person named Sir Walter Blount, 1st Baronet.
