George Arthur Wynn (born October 14, 1886, died October 28, 1966) was a talented Welsh professional football player. He played as a forward or a half-back for several clubs, including Oswestry United, Wrexham, Manchester City, Coventry City, and Halifax Town. He was known for being a great scorer, especially when close to the goal. George Wynn also proudly played for the Wales national team 12 times.

Football Career

Early Days

George Wynn started his football journey with Oswestry United in 1906. In his first year, he helped his team win the Welsh Cup, even scoring a goal in the final match!

Just a few weeks after this big win, Wrexham signed him. At the time, Wrexham was playing in the Football Combination league. While playing for Wrexham, George Wynn got his first chance to play for his country.

Playing for Wales

On March 1, 1909, George Wynn made his international debut for Wales. It was a Home Championship game against Scotland, played at The Racecourse in Wrexham. Wales won the exciting match 3-2. He scored his only goal for Wales in another 3-2 victory, this time against Ireland, also at The Racecourse.

Many bigger clubs noticed George Wynn's talent. In May 1909, he moved to Manchester City for £250, which was a good amount of money back then!

Time at Manchester City

George Wynn played his first game for Manchester City on Christmas Day in 1909. It was a tough match, and they lost 2-0 to Bradford Park Avenue. Just two days later, he scored his first goal for the club against Grimsby Town.

In the 1909–10 season, George Wynn scored 12 goals in 24 games. This helped Manchester City win the Second Division championship! For the next three seasons, he was Manchester City's top goal scorer, netting 9, 18, and 16 goals in each season.

His football career was affected by World War I. His last game for Manchester City was on September 8, 1919, shortly after the war ended, against Oldham Athletic. In total, he played 127 games for Manchester City and scored 60 goals.

Later Clubs

After the war, George Wynn played in two "Victory Internationals," which were unofficial matches between Wales and England to celebrate the end of the war. Then, he was sold to Coventry City for £300. He played 27 games for Coventry City over two seasons.

He also made one appearance for Halifax Town before finishing his career with a team called Mossley in the Cheshire League.

George Wynn was an important player for the Welsh national team before World War I. He played alongside famous players like Billy Meredith, who was also a legend at Manchester City.

Personal Life

During the First World War, George Wynn served as a private in the British Army. He was part of the Lancashire Fusiliers and later the Lincolnshire Regiment. In 1918, he was injured in his left leg during the war.
