The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is a special place that celebrates the amazing art of Georgia O'Keeffe. It also teaches about her life and the history of American modernism. The museum opened its doors on July 17, 1997. This was eleven years after Georgia O'Keeffe passed away.
The museum has several locations in Santa Fe and Abiquiu, New Mexico. These include the main Museum Galleries in Santa Fe. There is also a Library and Archive for research. An Education Annex offers programs for young people and the public. You can also visit Georgia O'Keeffe's historic home and studio in Abiquiu. The O'Keeffe Welcome Center is also in Abiquiu. There are Museum Stores in both Santa Fe and Abiquiu.

About the Museum's History
The museum was started in November 1995. It was founded by Anne Windfohr Marion and John L. Marion. They were philanthropists, meaning they gave money to good causes. They lived in Santa Fe part-time.
The main museum building was designed by architect Richard Gluckman. He also designed parts of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He also worked on the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
Peter H. Hassrick and Jay Cantor were the first leaders of the museum. George King was the director from 1998 to 2009. Robert Kret then served as director until 2019. Cody Hartley is the current director of the O'Keeffe Museum. He joined the museum in 2013.
Hartley wants the museum to be a beloved place for everyone. He hopes it will be a good neighbor in the community. He wants it to offer programs that help children and families.
What You Can See at the Museum
The museum has the largest collection of Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork. It also holds many of her personal items. These include things from her historic homes. The items on display in the Museum Galleries change throughout the year. This means there is always something new to see.
Some materials are also shown in the Library and Archives. You can also see items at the O'Keeffe Welcome Center.
Georgia O'Keeffe's Art Collection
The museum's art collection includes many of Georgia O'Keeffe's most important works. When the museum first opened, it had 140 of her pieces. Now, it has nearly 1,200 objects.
Her art shows many different subjects. She painted amazing abstract works. She also created famous large paintings of flowers, skulls, and landscapes. Other paintings show architectural forms, rocks, shells, and trees.

The museum used to have many special exhibitions. Now, it often rotates artworks from its own collection. This helps them share more of O'Keeffe's work.

Library and Archive for Research
The Michael S. Engl Family Foundation Library and Archive helps the museum with its work. It provides research services and resources. It focuses on studies of Georgia O’Keeffe and other modern artists. It also covers local history and modern art.
The Library and Archive has many materials for public research. You can visit it by making an appointment ahead of time. Many items from the collection are also available online. You can find them on the museum's Collections Online website.
Georgia O'Keeffe's Homes
Abiquiu Home and Studio
Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu Home and Studio is in Abiquiú. This is about 53 miles north of Santa Fe. This house was her main home for many years. She lived there from the late 1940s until the end of her life.
Public tours of the home and studio are available. You can visit from March through November. The house also has the artist's garden. Local students help to grow and harvest plants there each year.
Ghost Ranch Property
The museum also owns another house that belonged to Georgia O'Keeffe. This house is at the Ghost Ranch property. It is about 20 minutes north of Abiquiu. This house is not currently open to the public.
The Ghost Ranch is an educational retreat. It is not part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. It is owned and run by the Presbyterian Church. Ghost Ranch offers special tours that show the landscape. This landscape inspired many of Georgia O'Keeffe's famous paintings.
