About Georgie's Early Life
Georgie Prespakis grew up with her parents, Damien and Jody. Her mother is an Indigenous Australian from the Djadjawurrung tribe. Georgie has three brothers and sisters: her twin siblings Annalea and Jimmy, and her older sister Madison. Madison is also a professional AFLW player for the Essendon Football Club.
Playing Junior Football
When Georgie was younger, she played football with boys in Romsey. Later, she moved to Sunbury to play in the under-18 girls' competition. She was then chosen for the Calder Cannons development program. In 2019, she won the "best and fairest" award for that competition. This award goes to the player who is judged as the best and most sportsmanlike.
Georgie won her second "best and fairest" award in 2021. She played only nine games for the Cannons that year but was voted "best on ground" seven times! She finished her 2021 season playing five matches for the Essendon VFL Women's team. This included three final games.
Georgie's AFL Women's Career
The Geelong Cats picked Georgie Prespakis very early in the 2021 AFL Women's draft. She was their first choice and the second player chosen overall in the entire draft!
Starting Her AFLW Journey
Georgie made her AFL Women's debut in the first game of the 2022 season 6. She played against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval. In that game, she was nominated for the 2022 AFL Women's season 6 Rising Star award. This award celebrates young players who show great talent.
In March, Georgie was named in the 40-player squad for the AFL Players Association 22under22 team. This team is chosen by players and features the best young players under 22 years old. Georgie was even picked to play on the wing in the final 22under22 team.
Key Moments in 2022
In the first game of 2022 AFL Women's season 7, Georgie scored both of Geelong's goals. One of her goals came in the very last minute! This helped Geelong win a close game against Richmond at GMHBA Stadium.
After the 2022 season 7, Georgie was again named to the wing in the AFL Players Association 22 Under 22 team. She also received her first AFL Women's All-Australian team selection. This is a huge honor, as it means she was one of the best players in the whole league. Georgie was also one of the top 10 players in the voting for the league's "best and fairest" award. However, she couldn't win it because she had been suspended during the season.
Awards and Recognition
At the Geelong "best and fairest" awards for the 2022 season 7, Georgie finished second. She was only four points behind Amy McDonald, who had won the award three times before. This was amazing for Georgie, as it was only her second season!
Fans also voted Georgie as the "Cats Fans MVP" (Most Valuable Player). She also won a new award called the "Grit award." Geelong players voted each week for the teammate who showed the most "grit" during games. This included actions like tackles, smothers, and putting pressure on opponents.
In the first game of the 2023 season, Georgie kicked a goal that was mistakenly called a "behind" by the umpire. The AFL later confirmed it should have been a goal.
Georgie's Career Stats
Georgie has played many games for Geelong. By the end of the 2023 season, she had played 32 games and scored 6 goals. She is known for getting a lot of possessions (when a player gets the ball). She is a very important midfielder for her team.
