Georgina Leigh Bloomberg (born January 20, 1983) is a famous American equestrian, which means she is a professional horse rider. She owns an equestrian team called New York Empire. Georgina is also known for her charity work, helping people and animals. Her father is Michael Bloomberg, who used to be the mayor of New York City.

Growing Up and School

Georgina Bloomberg was born in New York City. She has an older sister named Emma. Georgina went to The Spence School. Later, she studied at New York University, graduating in 2010. She also took classes in fashion design at Parsons School of Design in 2012.

Her Amazing Riding Career

Georgina started riding horses when she was just four years old in 1987. By 1989, she began competing in horse shows. She quickly won many "best child rider" awards at big horse shows on the East Coast of the United States.

Becoming a Professional Rider

In 2000, Georgina started competing in "jumpers," which is a type of horse riding where horses jump over obstacles. In 2001, when she was 18, she won the United States Equestrian Team (USET)'s Talent Derby. She won an individual gold medal in 2003.

In 2004, at age 21, Georgina became a professional rider. She won the Maxine Beard Award that year. She continued to win many competitions, including the Metropolitan Cup and the Las Vegas Invitational Knockout in 2005. She also competed in the World Cup Finals and was part of the winning Samsung Super League team in France.

Team Success and Big Wins

Georgina kept achieving great things in her career. In 2007, she won the WEF Challenge Cup. She was also a member of the winning USA teams in Finland and Sweden. In Sweden, she had her first "double clear" performance in a major competition, meaning she completed two rounds without any faults.

In 2010, she won the Empire State Grand Prix and the Bluegrass Festival Grand Prix. In 2014, she helped the U.S. team win at the Furusiyya Nations Cup in Spain with another double clear performance. She also won the first-ever Central Park Grand Prix CSI 3* that year.

In 2015, Georgina won the Adequan Grand Prix CSI 3*. She also earned a team bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games as a new member of the U.S. Equestrian Team. In 2016, she won several more classes, including the Royalton Farms Open Jumper 1.40 m class and the American Gold Cup Qualifier.

Owning a Team

In 2016, Georgina also became a rider and owner for Team Miami Glory in the Global Champions League. After two years, she started the 2018 season as both a rider and owner for the New York Empire team. In 2019, she helped promote the Longines Global Champions Tour Finals, which took place in her hometown, New York City.

Georgina currently has several show jumping horses. Some of their names include Paola 233, Lilli, Cessna 24, and Crown 5. She also has younger horses like Manhattan and Starry Night.

Writing Books

Georgina Bloomberg has also written several books for young adults. These books are about the world of equestrian show jumping. She wrote them with Catherine Hapka:

  • The A Circuit, 2011, ISBN: 978-1-59990-634-8
  • My Favorite Mistake, 2012
  • Off Course, 2012
  • Rein It In, 2013

Helping Others and Animals

When she was 23, Georgina started a program called the Rider's Closet. This program collects new and gently used riding clothes and boots. It then gives them to therapeutic riding programs, pony clubs, and individuals who need them.

Georgina is on the board of several organizations, including the Hampton Classic Horse Show and the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Foundation. She is also a vice president at Animal Aid USA, an organization that helps animals.

In 2016, the Humane Society of the United States gave Georgina an award called the Compassion in Action Award. They recognized her for her hard work in protecting all animals. She is also a founding member of the Humane Generation/Friends of Finn committee. This group works with the Humane Society to stop the cruel treatment of dogs in puppy mills and encourages people to adopt pets.

Life Outside of Riding

In December 2013, Georgina had a son with her then-boyfriend, Ramiro Quintana, who is also an Olympic show jumping rider. She loves animals and has several rescue pets. These include four dogs, a goat, two mules, and two miniature horses.

Forbes magazine once included her on a list of "Most Intriguing Billionaire Heiresses." Georgina lives in different places, including Manhattan, North Salem, New York, and Wellington, Florida.

Georgina is engaged to Justin Waterman, an investment banker. The couple is expecting their second child in 2025. In early 2025, she bought a large home in the Hamptons, a famous area in New York.

Injuries

Georgina was born with a spinal condition called spondylolisthesis. This condition makes her back more likely to get fractures because it's not as stable. In 2002, she broke her back while training for a horse show. She had to wear a brace for six months to heal.

Later, she had another back fracture and a mild concussion after falling from a horse. Even with these injuries, she always wanted to keep competing. In 2011, Georgina had surgery on her spine. She took an eight-month break from riding to recover.
