Gerald McCann (born March 20, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He served as the mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey for two terms. When he was first elected in 1981, he was one of the youngest mayors in the city's history.
Gerald McCann's Life and Public Service
Early Life and First Term as Mayor
Gerald McCann was born in the Greenville area of Jersey City on March 20, 1950. He grew up in the city he would later lead.
He first became mayor of Jersey City in 1981. He served his first term until 1985. After his first term, another mayor, Anthony R. Cucci, took office.
Second Term and Later Career
McCann was elected mayor again in 1989. He served his second term until early 1992. His time as mayor ended, and he was no longer able to hold political office.
After his departure, several people served as mayor. First, City Council President Marilyn Roman took over for a few months. Then, local councilman Joseph Rakowski served through the summer. Later, Bret Schundler became mayor. Schundler was the first Republican mayor of Jersey City since 1917. He went on to serve two full terms.
In February 2010, Gerald McCann took on a new role. He was hired as an inspector for the city's incinerator authority.
