Gerard was the oldest son of Sir Joshua Vanneck, 1st Baronet. His mother's name was Mary Anne Daubuz. His father, Joshua, was a very successful merchant in London. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. Joshua had moved to Great Britain from the Netherlands in 1722.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1768, Gerard Vanneck was chosen to be a Member of Parliament. This meant he had a seat in the House of Commons. He represented an area called Dunwich. He kept this important job until 1790.

Building Heveningham Hall
In 1777, Gerard became the 2nd Baronet after his father passed away. Soon after, he decided to build a grand house. This house is called Heveningham Hall and is located in Suffolk, England. It is a beautiful example of old English architecture.
His Later Life
Sir Gerard Vanneck never married. He passed away in May 1791. After his death, his younger brother, Joshua, became the next Baronet. Joshua later received another special title, becoming Baron Huntingfield in 1796.
