Gerlach Flicke was a German portrait painter who worked in London during the 1500s. He is known for his detailed paintings, especially portraits of important people. Flicke created the earliest known self-portrait painted in oils in England. He was active as an artist from about 1545 until his death in 1558.

Early Life and Career

Gerlach Flicke was born in Osnabrück, a town in Germany. He later moved to London, England, around 1545. In London, he became a portrait painter.

Flicke often signed his paintings with a Latin version of his name. He also added "Germanus" to show that he was from Germany. This highlighted his training as an artist there. He painted portraits of important figures, including Mary I of England, who was the Queen of England.

Notable Paintings

One of Flicke's best paintings was a full-length portrait of Lord Darcy. This painting was made around 1551. It was last seen in 1848 and has been lost since then.

His most famous painting is probably the portrait of Thomas Cranmer. This painting was made in 1545. Today, you can see it at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Imprisonment and Self-Portrait

In 1554, Gerlach Flicke was put in prison in London. While he was there, he became friends with a man named Henry Strangwish. The exact reason for Flicke's imprisonment is not known.

While in prison, Flicke created a very special painting. It was a small double portrait of himself and Henry Strangwish. This painting is less than four inches tall. Flicke's part of the painting is a self-portrait. It is the first known self-portrait painted in oils in England.

The self-portrait has a Latin message. It says something like: "This is what Gerlach Flicke looked like when he was a painter in London. He painted this himself, using a mirror, for his dear friends. So they would have something to remember him by after he died."

Later Life and Death

Gerlach Flicke died in London on January 24, 1558. He passed away in the area of St Giles-without-Cripplegate. He left his belongings to a servant in Osnabrück. This suggests that Osnabrück was still his hometown.
