How the German-Armenian Society Started

The German–Armenian Society began in 1914 in Berlin. It was started by Johannes Lepsius, Paul Rohrbach, and Avetik Isahakyan. Johannes Lepsius was the first leader of the group.

The main reason for starting the society was that Armenians in the Ottoman Empire were facing very difficult times. One year later, a period of great suffering for Armenians began. The society wanted to help the Armenian people gain independence or at least have more control over their own lives.

The Society's Journey Over Time

After Paul Rohrbach, who later became the leader, passed away in 1956, the society stopped working for a while. But in 1972, the group was started up again in Frankfurt am Main. Today, the German–Armenian Society has 274 members.

What the Society Does Today

Since 1973, the society has published a magazine four times a year called Armenisch-Deutsche Korrespondenz ("Armenian-German Correspondence"). They have also published several books. These books include 75 Years of the German-Armenian Society (published in 1989), Phoenix From the Ashes: Armenia 80 Years After the Genocide (published in 1996), and Armenia: History and Survival in a Difficult Environment (published in 1998). Another book they published is Regarding Some Political and Legal Aspects of the Nagorno-Karabakh Problem (published in 1999).

The German–Armenian Society also organizes many meetings and talks. It is part of other important groups, like the Association for the Study of Nationalities in the United States and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen in Stuttgart. The current leader of the society is Dr. Raffi Kantian.
